I could tell immediately that she had studied absolutely every aspect of his chart and H&P. She had readied herself with every bit of available information so that she could provide not just adequate care, but excellent care.
I am the wife of a patient who was admitted. D underwent surgery for a colon resection in the morning. By afternoon his condition had begun to deteriorate. D was taken back to surgery at 0300 for internal bleeding. After coming out of the 2nd surgery, D was placed in ICU. His dayshift nurse in ICU that Thursday and Friday was Dominique. When I first met and began talking with her, I could tell immediately that she had studied absolutely every aspect of his chart and H&P. She had readied herself with every bit of available information so that she could provide not just adequate care, but excellent care. Dom was off on Saturday and Sunday, but she was back on Monday and her excellence was just beginning. D had not had any food since the previous Monday. He was weak, dehydrated, and miserable. (He had been kept NPO due to some unforeseen complications.) Dom IMMEDIATELY went to work, advocating for my husband, and because of her tenacity and diligence, my husband began receiving TPN, finally. Dominique is a prime example of what great nursing looks like. There are many good nurses, but great nurses are hard to find, mostly because it takes so much effort to dig a little deeper and not just blindly follow orders. We will be forever grateful for her.
