Since joining the Emergency Department team, Merclo “Mick” Garcia has distinguished himself with the exceptional care and the compassion he extends to his patients. Highly respected by the ED staff, Mick is renowned for going above and beyond for his patients. His colleagues comment that he ALWAYS introduces himself to his patients, ensures that his patients are comfortably situated in their rooms and that their families receive frequent and timely updates. Mick's supervisors are equally impressed by his initiative in arranging transportation for patients, procuring hospital beds for the elderly patients with extended stays, and his enthusiasm for assisting the patients of other nurses. Mick is a tough act to follow, his patients frequently comment to their next nurse how great his care was. Most recently, Mick was recognized for demonstrating the perfect balance of expeditious critical care with compassion for a patient and their loved ones. Called into action by a Code Stroke, Mick was the first nurse to respond. While performing a timely assessment and evaluating the situation, he explained what was happening to the patient and to the family present at the bedside. Mick took the time to explain the plan of care to the family which assured them their loved one was receiving the best of care. In addition to the expert nursing care, Mick also took the time to ensure the patient was comfortable providing pillows and extra warm blankets impressing not only the family and ED staff, but also staff members from other units who were present.
