"To Be World Class". This statement highlights the efforts of a very special team of critical care educators. Led by division specialty educator Steven Paulson, CCRN, BSN, RN; this team has developed a standardized cardiovascular education program that addresses the growing need for highly skilled CV RNs. While our larger campuses appreciate a steady flow of CV patients upon which nurses can learn, it is apparent that our smaller volume facilities struggle to find the opportunities and expertise to develop the nurses needed to care for this specialized population. In addition, the variability in how nurses are trained across the division creates safety concerns that Steve and his team sought to resolve. Along with Steve; Larissa, Ashley, Mira, Carina, and Mandie have poured hundreds of hours into the research, organization, and stakeholder communication necessary to get an evidence-based program up and running. There are numerous other contributors including CV preceptors, surgeons, intensivists, cardiovascular coordinators, nurse directors, Division CNE and CNOs. The program includes didactic, skills and simulation scenarios to help support the CV RN’s knowledge and skills for caring for this vulnerable population. This level of collaboration is already seeing results in the feedback received from the program participants and stakeholders. “I am happy to have formal training and not just get thrown into the deep end” (program participant) “Day 2 was extremely helpful to tie up loose ends in my head and the scenario-based questions make you think through multiple concepts” (program participant) “Their program should be highlighted as “the” best practice and a stand-alone program that other healthcare systems would fall short to compete with” (Amanda Wood, CNO Methodist Hospital-Texsan) “Steve and his team have done what no one else has been able to do. Taking an idea with so many edges and turning it into a smooth program is not an easy task. I can’t wait to see where this goes!” (Sonya Holder, Division Director of Education Programs, Methodist Healthcare) “Very good class- recommend for all CV nurses” (CV Preceptor) “Our ICU Educators collaborated to create a world-class CV Education program that helps us to fulfill our collective why of providing exceptional healthcare. What an amazing accomplishment! The best is yet to come!” (Jamie Lingsch, Division Vice President Clinical Education. Methodist Healthcare) The commitment of these educators to the vision of Methodist Healthcare has impacted how evidence-based CV education is delivered across the division. It has created a template for other specialties to standardize their programs. Thank you, Steve, Larissa, Ashley, Mira, Carina, and Mandie. YOU are World Class.
