Karen came in the next day with a large bag of Skittles, she put it in a little gift bag, and brought it to him.
Karen is one of the kindest, most caring nurses, not just with the patients but with all the staff. Karen is never too busy to help anyone. If she sees a need she jumps in to help. Karen always comes to work with a smile and a joyful attitude. One of our nurses was out with COVID-19 late last year, and this nurse had recently had her first baby. Not only did she have COVID-19, but her husband and infant daughter were sick with it too. She has no family here in the US to help her. Karen's first thought was "what can we do to help? I don't think any of them are able to even get to the store to get food and other supplies". The nurse who was out sick was moved to tears when she heard what Karen wanted to do for her.
Our unit receives many Cystic Fibrosis patients. Last week while Karen was rounding on patients, she asked one of our young CF patients if there was anything she could do for him to make his stay better, he stated, "You all treated me with care and respect and listened to me when I voiced concerns. With that being said, something as simple as a smile which I receive from many of my nurses, the employees who delivered my meals, and the lovely staff members who kept my room clean, had a huge impact on my stay and made it a much more positive and healing environment." Then Karen asked him, is there anything she could bring him to eat that he would like? He said he would love to have some Skittles. Karen came in the next day with a large bag of Skittles, she put it in a little gift bag, and brought it to him. He started to cry and was so thankful and even mentioned how nice the gift bag itself was.
This is the kind of caring, thoughtful person Karen is. Her team members are always happy to work with her because they know she is always there to lend a helping hand. We are so proud to work with such a loving and gracious individual. Karen truly exemplifies our mission of Extending the Healing Ministry of Christ and the service standard "love me".
