Caitlyn genuinely rejoiced with us and at that point seemed to make it her mission to get him into Rehabilitation.
My father was admitted to ICU with COVID pneumonia the first week of February. After little more than a week, we were told that the medical staff did not expect him to survive. He was on 100% oxygen and his saturation levels were decreasing. Caitlyn sat down with us and explained what the natural progression would be since my father did not want to be put on a ventilator. She was extremely kind and compassionate as she spoke with us, even sharing how her own father had passed away from COVID. She arranged for us to meet with a palliative care nurse so that we could put some plans in place. That was Caitlyn’s last day on duty until the following weekend. As it turned out, my father made a miraculous recovery and by the time Caitlyn came back to work several days later, she barely recognized him. She genuinely rejoiced with us and at that point seemed to make it her mission to get him into Bannasch Institute for Rehabilitation. Immediately, she was getting him out of bed and into a chair as well as having him use a commode instead of a bedpan. She was his personal cheerleader/drill sergeant, gently pushing him to do more than what he thought he could do. And it seemed like she was the only one who could do it. In all our interactions with her, we knew she was advocating for him with the medical staff and with Bannasch physical therapists. She just knew she would be able to get him in there even after two evaluations from Bannasch that determined he would not be a good candidate for their facility. Then it happened – the physical therapist came for a third time. Caitlyn told the physical therapist that she was going to get my father out of the chair and using the walker, have him walk to the door and back to his chair. The physical therapist did not believe her. We also were skeptical since my father had never taken more than a couple of steps from the bed to the chair. But she was positive that she instilled that confidence into my father! And he did it in front of the physical therapist! There were a few other issues the physical therapist brought up as to why my father could not go to Bannasch, but Caitlyn had the appropriate counterarguments so that by the end of the day, we were told that my father would be going to Bannasch within a few days! Our family will be forever grateful to this caring, compassionate nurse who went far above and beyond routine patient care, and actually ministered to our family and our father in a way that we will never forget!
