What we saw in Jami was a heart made of gold, a voice as sweet as honey, and eyes that smiled brighter than anything!
Being a NICU parent is never easy. Sure, there will be good days and bad days but the people you encounter have the opportunity to make it a little worse or a little better. Our little girl was diagnosed with a left CDH at 22 weeks gestation. We did everything to mentally prepare as parents. The moments after the birth of our first child, what we never saw coming was the community we would be welcomed into here at CHOC NICU. There were many wonderful people we met, but one shined the most above them all. She walked into the room as if with just a little hum and a skip, that the world would be okay. For weeks we were restless and untrusting of anyone to be alone with our little girl, but this nurse finally gifted us our first moment to finally just catch our breaths. What we saw in her was a heart made of gold, a voice as sweet as honey, and eyes that smiled brighter than anything! We felt as if she cared for our little girl as if she were her own. So much so, that once our little one was given an extubation day, she picked up an extra shift just to be present for that milestone! I don’t know about you, but anyone who picks up an extra shift to work must truly be in the right profession. Our nurse knew how to get us to smile through the tough times and celebrate with us through even the smallest victories. It’s not to say we were easy parents to deal with, what parents are? But she knew how to make us heard and always explained the complexities of medications and procedures in such an educationally positive way. Everyone always asked us how we knew so much in the medical sense, we were even asked if we had backgrounds in medicine. But no, what we had in the “background” was an amazing nurse with patience and a heart to teach. Thanks to CHOC NICU, our little girl will have many firsts in this world, but nurse Jami, you’ll be the first stranger that became family. Thank you for all you’ve done for our little girl, she will grow up hearing the stories of the real-life superhero with a curly top-bun, glasses, crocs, and festive scrubs that helped save her life. We’re forever indebted to you for your kindness.
