Her compassion in our program has allowed us to truly give an opportunity to several patients by being on a home modality that I know does not happen across the board.
Bonnie is a PD Nurse at Burton Dialysis. She exhibits a high level of compassion on a daily basis with all patients and caregivers. She goes above and beyond to provide service excellence and consistently remains compassionate regardless of the situation. I have several stories I could provide about how she has exhibited compassion in situations where many nurses may have not. There are two specific situations I would like to mention where she exemplified the utmost compassion.

First, there was a patient who had been involuntarily discharged from a local DaVita ICHD facility. This particular patient had been involuntarily discharged from multiple competitors in the area as well. The patient was presenting to the local hospital for dialysis treatments as he was not allowed back into multiple facilities. This patient suffers from PTSD and had anger issues etc. One of our physician partners had been seeing the patient at the hospital when he presented for dialysis. The physician talked to the patient in depth about PD as a potential option. He then spoke to Bonnie and our team about possibly bringing this patient into our program. Many of us were skeptical knowing his track record and the fact he was involuntarily discharged from our of our local ICHD clinics. Bonnie, being who she is agreed to meet with the patient and determine if he was a potential candidate for PD. After meeting with the patient and setting expectations with the patient on being on a home modality she felt we should bring him on board. Her words were "He has PTSD, has been through a lot but deserves another chance and I believe we can give him that". She always looks for the good and does not dwell on the negative when it comes to providing patient care.

Recently, our Medical Director came to us with a similar situation another patient who had been involuntarily discharged from multiple facilities. He stated the patient was non-compliant and had been on PD in the past etc. Bonnie instantly said, "Let's bring her in so I can talk with her and her spouse". After meeting with the patient and spouse Bonnie stated: "I believe she deserves another chance and we should bring her into our program". Her compassion in our program has allowed us to truly give an opportunity to several patients by being on a home modality that I know does not happen across the board. She thinks outside the box and is willing to do whatever is needed to give patients the opportunity to do Peritoneal Dialysis. If you were to compliment or thank Bonnie for exhibiting the compassion she does, she would state "I'm not doing anything out of the norm. This is what I signed up for when becoming a nurse". She truly cares about all patients and is the most compassionate nurse I have worked with since starting with DaVita in 2000.
