Martha is a person who always has such a positive personality and never says “no” when she is asked to help. I had the opportunity to work with Martha at a unit with a very high catheter rate. She handled it like a true professional. Her attitude continued to remain positive even when things became very overwhelming. Working with her is always like a nursing dance. She is the type of nurse who has the clinical insight to know what to do and when to do it. Martha takes the time to get to know her patients. She identifies problems and promptly addresses them. One day we were scheduled to split a day with an overlap for shift change. It was a particularly rough day of fighting with several alarming catheters. Two of the patients walking in needed activase. She took the time to reassure the patients that everything was under control and refused to leave until they were all running smoothly. Throughout that time I kept insisting that she leave so she could take care of her own engagements. Her words to me were, “I wouldn’t want someone to leave me drowning and I won’t leave you either.” She puts everyone else’s needs above her own. Martha exemplifies what it is to be a strong, caring, and compassionate nurse to both her team and her patients. She goes above and beyond every day and is honestly one of the best nurses I have worked with.
