Jen Basler clearly cares and is compassionate about people. Even when she did not know me as a student, she took the time to talk with me about the School of Nursing. In Spring 2020, I toured UWO and happened to pass her office. She stopped what she was doing and answered my questions about the program. I remember feeling welcome and I went home to my family to let them know that I wanted to attend UWO Accelerated BSN Program. As my professor, she related to me, asked me about my well-being, and shared her experience and knowledge. Teaching online can be difficult as it can feel impersonal. Yet, Jen made it personal. She showed that she cared. Jen also helped me believe in myself when I really needed it. She helped me learn and climb over my fears and insecurities. She worked with both of our busy schedules to meet online with me on several different occasions. She shared that she had struggled as a nursing student, which helped me push through pharmacology, a subject that I struggle with. Not only was Jen available, but she could also explain things that I could not learn via textbook, chart, or video. We studied Beta Blockers and she simply said: B1 is heart because you have one and B2 is lungs because you have two. She also drew a simple drawing to help me understand the heart and lungs. She wanted me to succeed even when I didn’t know if I would. Jen demonstrates integrity through her approachable, honest, and accountable nature. She spends time honing her craft as a teacher to reach us at different points of our learning. She uses videos, reading, powerpoints, podcasts, discussions, and makes herself available to meet us online. In our legal and ethics course, she even used a “choose your own adventure” book to go through real situations we may encounter. At bootcamp, she helped us put our skills together. She went through the mechanism of action and side effects of furosemide, helped us figure out the dosage via nursing math, and helped us practice drawing up a syringe. UWO is lucky to have her as part of the faculty. I am lucky to have had her as my professor.
