During her appointment, Anita spent time discussing the patient’s options for other living situations and transportation options.
Recently, our wound care secretary received a call from a wound patient with complaints that she was unable to make it to her wound care appointment. During the phone call, Brenda questioned the patient to see what the issue was and if there was other forms of transportation (taxi or medicab) the patient could use to make it to her appointment. After further investigation, the patient confessed that she was alone at home due to her daughter being drunk and leaving her (the patient) at home alone. The patient admitted that she was in severe pain and unable to walk or get off the couch by herself because of her pain and weakness. She continued to talk to the patient and the patient agreed to allow our secretary to call EMS so she could get the help that she needed and be brought to either the ED or wound care. The patient ended up being brought to wound care for her appointment to see Anita, RN. During her appointment, she spent time discussing the patient’s options for other living situations and transportation options. After the appointment was over Anita took the patient to the lobby to be picked up by supposedly a friend or other family member, but little did we know the patient had no one coming to pick her up. As our unit secretary was leaving work she found the patient had been left at the hospital and the patient was confused. She had discovered the patient had been outside all day in the heat with nothing to drink. Our secretary and Anita took the patient to the ED due to the patient being left alone, no family around, and being confused and possibly dehydrated. Anita agreed to stay with the patient on her own time while the patient was in the ED, so the nurse taking care of the patient knew what was going on with the patient, and the patient’s situation, and so the patient was not alone while being confused.
