No nurse deserves this award more than my manager. Her exceptional, genuine qualities of kindness, dignity, empathetic concern, and respect for patients, their families, and colleagues go above and beyond. Always Deirdre puts patient care first. When a local GP surgery was unable to do a first-day post-operative change of dressing, Deirdre put the mother’s distress and anxiety for her son at ease. She organized the first change of dressing in the OPD and the follow-up care in a non-judgmental, dignified and professional manner. She engaged in effective communication with the doctor, the management of the hospital, and the surgeon displaying professional courage. She assessed the situation carefully and made precise clinical decisions. She listened to the GP and why this specific surgery was not doing dressing changes. Because of Deirdre’s exceptional handling of the situation in her remarkable professional manner, this surgery is now doing dressings. This patient was for daily dressings, and Deirdre demonstrated exceptional courage to do the right thing, and as she always does, she put the patients’ needs first. She is an amazing manager and person. I cannot emphasize enough why Deirdre deserves this DAISY Award as she meets all the criteria as an outstanding nurse, manager, and colleague.
