She immediately let us hear our daughter's heartbeat in order to try and reduce our anxiety. Val always made it a point to stop and listen when we had a question or concern.
In May 2019 my husband and I were expecting our first child. Our baby was stillborn. The experience was very traumatic and has left us both with PTSD diagnoses and anxiety. Our 2nd pregnancy was filled with anxiety and worry every single day. The final weeks were especially hard. Our daughter was to be delivered via cesarean section as she was very large and breech at 37 weeks gestation. The morning of our scheduled surgery, my husband and I were both very anxious and worried. Val greeted us at the L&D door and immediately started taking care of our biggest concerns first. She immediately let us hear our daughter's heartbeat in order to try and reduce our anxiety. Val always made it a point to stop and listen when we had a question or concern. Since a good portion of our concerns were related to PTSD, Val would ask why and what had us upset/worried so she could work on a solution for us. Some examples of this: I am fearful of operating rooms and all the equipment. For this pregnancy, I had hopes of delivering vaginally. I was not able to do this so instead I decided that I wanted to walk into the operating room. This sounds like a little thing to most but for us, this was giving me some power back. Val put a small blanket over my eyes and guided me into the room. Walking with her like that really helped me feel like I was conquering a fear. It was difficult but she helped me stand tall and accomplish something I never thought I'd be able to do again. My husband and I both feel that Val went above and beyond. We know that our past isn't unique to us alone, that others have also walked this path. Thankfully, it's not frequent. People like Val really make a huge difference when couples in our shoes choose to again walk down the terrifying childbearing road. We are grateful for her hard work and compassionate care.
