JoJo is known throughout the hospital. He is the “go-to” person for everything and anything. There are fellow ED nurses who will sign up extra when he is working. During the height of COVID surges, when there were no rooms/space for patients, JoJo took care of the department without needing support. He does his job well, is very organized, and does whatever needs to be done. He is always available, very approachable, humble, and kind. He has the patience to teach new nurses and care for patients the Magnet and Mercy way. An employee was taken to the ED after having a seizure in the breakroom. The ED was packed with patients who were also being held in the hallways. The employee was in a wheelchair getting registered when she started getting pale and said, “I don’t feel good.” It was the change of shift and very chaotic, yet JoJo somehow was able to get a clean stretcher and found a space for the employee. The employee began having another seizure, and, as usual, JoJo was the first person to respond and acted quickly to start necessary treatment and alert the physician. JoJo is known for his ability to start an IV on anyone. A physician’s mother was an inpatient in acute care and was near the end of her life. She needed a palliative blood transfusion, but no one could place a peripheral IV; the team was at the point of calling anesthesia to start a central line. Rather than go that route, the nurse called to ask JoJo to come up and try to start a peripheral line. Despite the ED being extremely busy, JoJo went to the unit and placed a line bringing peace to the situation. Despite everything going on in healthcare, JoJo has sustained his purpose of nursing- to make a difference in the lives of patients and families.
