Every labor and delivery should have an “Elsie”; we’re sure fortunate we did!
Having Elsie oversee our care was the best blessing we could’ve asked for. She’s caring, empathetic, personable, was acutely aware of my physical and emotional needs, and does her job like an absolute BOSS. What sets Elsie apart as an absolute Rockstar is the calming effect her knowledge and presence had on our time at Beaumont. We eagerly awaited the daily 7 AM shift change because having Elsie “in our corner” allowed us to be at peace, knowing she was looking over us. Finding peace while laboring for over 30 hours was a gift in its own right. Elsie put us at ease with every interaction, even the difficult ones. Every labor and delivery should have an “Elsie”; we’re sure fortunate we did! I would like to nominate Elsie Erickson from the Labor & Delivery Nursing Department as a deserving recipient of the DAISY Award. This nurse’s clinical skills and especially her compassionate care exemplify the kind of nurse that our patients, their families, and our staff recognize as an outstanding role model: **After some complications with my vaginal delivery, I ended up giving birth via C-section after 30+ hours of labor. As soon as I returned to our room and our baby was taken care of, Elsie stated, “Now it’s time to focus on Mom.” At this time, I did not feel at all like myself: I had not showered, brushed my hair, nor eaten since arriving over 30 hours ago. Elsie proceeded to lead the other nurse in helping me bathe in bed and brush my hair. Simple things that I really appreciated in that moment. **Another story worth mentioning comes at about the 26-hour mark of labor. My husband and I had been running on almost zero sleep as we labored, and seeing how burnt out my husband was, Elsie strongly recommended he get some sleep and food ASAP. My husband advocated for me and actively supported me throughout our time at Beaumont, and this advice did what no triple shot of espresso from Starbucks could ever do. After Elsie recommended a nap and a meal, he was again able to give me 100% of himself, and 100% was what I truly needed. Coming from anyone other than Elsie, it’s doubtful my husband would’ve been so quick to agree. **Lastly, during one of my post-op visits to a Doctor, I was told that removing the dressing from atop my stitches would be very painful. Little did either of us know that Elsie did such an amazing job shaving me there beforehand, making the dressing removal process ultimately painless.
