They felt Jeni was a part of their family because she treated all of them as a member of her own extended family.
Jeni Barnas is a Breast Cancer Nurse Navigator. Jeni is a caring and compassionate person who treats everyone with dignity and respect, whether they are a cancer patient or fellow staff member. A few examples are:
1) Jeni was working with a young patient diagnosed with breast cancer. This patient had to make some very difficult decisions about her treatment within a very short period. Jeni took the lead by talking to the Medical Oncologist about palliative care and eventually hospice; she anticipated her needs and worked with the team to ensure that they were met. Jeni included the social worker in all consultations with palliative and hospice, and therefore, the patient and her family felt as though there was an entire team supporting them. When the patient transitioned to our hospice residence, Jeni brought her Christmas decorations and visited with her regularly. She also coordinated visits with the social worker to ensure that one of them visited every week. Jeni went to the patient's funeral, and the patient's daughter asked her to say a few words about her mother. They felt Jeni was a part of their family because she treated all of them as a member of her own extended family.
2) Another example of her going above and beyond is her work with a cancer patient who was diagnosed when she was pregnant with her first child. Jeni helped her thru treatment and delivery with support, appointments, and questions. The patient made a complete recovery and had a healthy baby. Jeni was also there for her when she gave birth to her second child. Jeni always goes the extra mile!!!
3) Jeni is the first touch all patients have with their breast cancer diagnosis. She sets up a wonderful bond and fields communication with them at all hours of the day and night, answering them with kindness and compassion every time. Patients sing her praises every day. The Cancer Institute and Ascension Health are very proud and blessed to have Jeni on our team. She deserves to be honored for the person she is, the service she provides, and the love she exudes into the community for all those we serve.
