This extraordinary group of nursing staff has demonstrated ICARE values in providing care to our Veterans on the acute psychiatric unit daily. They have implemented multiple evidence-based best practices, and processes as well as performance improvement projects on the unit which have positively impacted the care received by the Veterans, as well as the organization. The PARC nursing team has been an example of the decentralization of COVID patient management in the organization. During an outbreak, the team came together and implemented multiple strategies to follow the isolation precautions in collaboration with the medical time, infection control team, environmental services team, and logistics. When other services did not feel comfortable providing some routine services, the nursing team stepped up and filled in those gaps. PARC was the first unit within the Durham VA Health Care System to manage COVID-positive patients outside of a designated COVID unit. The nursing staff also have worked to implement the utilization of robotic pet therapy as an evidence-based modality to provide care for patients with dementia and behavioral issues. The use of this care has demonstrated a reduction in aggressive behavior within this patient population, as well as a means of decreasing agitation in this population.
