Jill frequently checked in to see how my husband and I were doing.

My foster son, "A," was admitted to Saint Alexius Medical Center after being in our care for only a week. He came to our home with a distended abdomen, which we were told was his "normal" due to his Hirschsprung's Disease. Right away, I booked an appointment with the GI specialist he had seen over a year ago, Dr. "B," but when "A" complained of pain, we took him to ER. We couldn't wait another two days for the appointment. First and foremost, the whole nurse staff deserves recognition for the incredible care and commitment to making "A" feel better. I cannot say enough good things about the compassion and care he received; I am incredibly grateful for their patience in answering all of the questions my husband and I had. As new foster parents, we have so much to learn, and the nurses all helped us in that process. Very soon into "A's" stay at St. Alexius, Jill, the charge nurse, introduced herself to our family. She always took the time to explain things not only to us but also to "A" in ways we could understand. She was aware of his past trauma and took extra care to ensure his comfort, feelings, safety, and security. I'll never forget the time she spent helping me learn how to perform enemas for "A"; we would need to be able to continue enemas at home, so it was paramount that we learn how to do them under the guidance of the nurse staff. My first attempts did not go well. With time, I learned and was finally able to complete the treatment for him, and every time, I had Jill's voice in my head, talking me through the steps. She was even able to bring light to the situation later- sometimes, we need a little humor to get through the worst of it. While Jill was "A's" nurse, she took care of our whole family unit. Jill frequently checked in to see how my husband and I were doing. She always took the time to assure us that we were doing the right things and that we weren't the failures we thought we were, she validated us, she told us how she understood how challenging the situation was, and she helped get "A" special services to make his stay fun and engaging for him. After a particularly challenging day, Jill found me awake in the room around 3 AM. The unit was relatively light that night, so she took the time to talk with me about "A" and his care moving forward. I was so touched by how much she cared and how she truly was helping our whole family. I am forever grateful - she got me through the night and gave me strength for the next day and the rest of our stay. For Jill's willingness to go above and beyond clinical care and for her ability to care for the whole patient - mind, body, soul, and FAMILY, I hope you will consider recognizing Jill as an exemplary nurse with a DAISY Award.
