She keeps things calm and low-stress and keeps me informed of what she or the doctor is doing.
I've been in the hospital for five days. Severe hydration, then tested positive for COVID. I'm being treated for esophageal cancer and have to rely on a feeding tube for nourishment. The tube was not placed by VA medical staff. The tube broke off last night and has had its problems ever since. Stomach bile gets out and really burns the skin. The dressing gets saturated as well as the bedding and gown. Everything has to be changed. When I notify Carissa of the situation, she responds quickly and efficiently. She gets the old dressing off and cleans the affected area quickly and completely. If it looks like there has been changes, she doesn't hesitate to contact the doctor on rounds for them to come over and advise. Carissa has to go through all this every two hours or so as the bile keeps discharging and saturating everything around the tube site. There can be a high degree of pain involved in the wound area. Carissa is hands-on for that as well as making sure the proper dosages are used. She keeps things calm and low-stress and keeps me informed of what she or the doctor is doing. During all this, she finds room for laughter. Patients under her care leave this hospital in better shape than when they came in. The bottom line is that Carissa is a credit to this hospital and a great asset. I have had great service overall with the medical staff over the years, but Carissa has gone above and beyond. Thank you for this opportunity to recognize her.
