Melissa’s actions are in direct alignment with Englewood Hospital’s mission. She conducts herself with compassion and caring for human values, demonstrated in the care for our patients and in her interactions with colleagues. Her passion for the nursing profession is inspiring to those she has precepted. On numerous occasions, I have witnessed Melissa’s genuine display of concern for the new staff. Melissa is committed to ensuring that the best educational opportunities are given to those she is precepting. She inspires new staff through being a coach, facilitator of knowledge, and mentor to some. A recent incident on the unit required an RRT to be called. Melissa took this learning opportunity to bring the new orientee into the patient’s room. First, she safely managed the patient’s immediate needs. The entire time she spent in the patient’s room with the RRT, Melissa remained calm. She then took the opportunity to debrief the event with the orientee. He was grateful for the experience, and he was comfortable asking questions in a non-threatening environment. I have witnessed Melissa seek out a newer colleague and offer support when he had a first-time patient death. She offered to help with the care, and she reviewed the expected tasks associated with a patient death. The new nurse expressed gratitude for her wisdom and compassion. These are a few reasons why I believe Melissa should be recognized. She is my vote for the DAISY Award winner!
