Shelby held their hands, wiped away tears, and gave the best hugs and high-fives once the shot was administered.
Shelby is always a ray of sunshine. She shows compassion to everyone she encounters and always gives 100% in everything she does. Shelby did an outstanding job juggling nursing school on top of her commitment to the University of Arkansas Track team. She has a great attitude and leads by example among her peers in the clinical setting. I have witnessed Shelby taking the time to listen to patients and their families during stressful times and always finding the right words to provide comfort and reassurance. I believe that she embodies what the DAISY Award celebrates: compassionate, above-and-beyond nursing care. Shelby has remained soft-spoken during this program but she exhibits compassionate care to all patients that she encounters.

During the fall semester pediatric rotation, I was able to work with Shelby and witness her compassionate care firsthand. Flu shot clinics can be challenging for patients, but when you add that the patients are children, it can be a little more challenging. Shelby was able to speak with students (ages 5-18) and provide encouragement before having to receive a flu shot. She held their hands, wiped away tears, and gave the best hugs and high-fives once the shot was administered. This is only one interaction I can speak to, there are many more. I know she will continue to provide compassionate care to her future patients and that this is only her first DAISY nomination. I'm proud of you, Shelby. Go do great things.
