He assured us not to hesitate to call and that he would never get tired of hearing our voices.
My dad, "J,"  was in the ICU at Ascension Providence for nine days due to severe complications of COVID-19. Despite him being fully vaccinated and our whole family taking all necessary precautions, my dad was severely immunocompromised due to battling lymphoma since fall 2020 and had received chemo treatments just prior to testing positive for COVID. Although he, unfortunately, passed away, he received wonderful nursing care during his time in the ICU, particularly from Charlie Hunter. Charlie was my dad's nurse for four days in a row. During this time, Charlie answered our phone calls and gave us thorough updates when we could not be there in person. When we were able to be there, Charlie was reassuring and comforting while also being honest and explaining everything that was being done, as well as what was unable to be done. Charlie has an absolute wealth of knowledge. We had several questions, and Charlie answered every single one in detail. There is no doubt that Charlie was the single most informative member of "J's" team that we had interacted with throughout his hospital stay. Most of all, Charlie is compassionate. He assured us not to hesitate to call and that he would never get tired of hearing our voices. With tears in his eyes, he looked us in the eye and said, "I am so sorry this is happening to you," and although we had heard those words over and over, they never felt as genuine as when he said them to us. Charlie also talked to my dad. Although he was heavily sedated and paralyzed, Charlie told him words of encouragement as he was providing hands-on nursing care. As a nurse myself, I know that Charlie fully embodies what it means to be an amazing nurse and a human being. I also know that all of this empathy and compassion does not come easily, especially during the horrors of this pandemic. My whole family wants Charlie to know how deeply appreciated he is despite the challenges of this profession. We will never forget him and the wonderful care he provided to my dad, "J." I know that if my dad had been awake and able to talk, he would have invited Charlie to our house for dinner and got him a Coca-Cola or U of M shirt to wear to work. However, he couldn't, so my dad's same warm and positive spirit radiated through Charlie. We truly cannot thank him enough.
