She simultaneously provided emotional support to our anxious and scared patient while explaining what was happening in a way that was compassionate.
Mary Anne is very approachable and knowledgeable and is present on the floor at all times providing assistance and expertise when it is needed. One of her qualities that stands out to me is that she is always supportive of her staff and encompasses what it truly means to be a nurse.
While there are many situations and stories that are great examples of how she is an exceptional nurse, there is a recent story that comes to mind. During change of shift, while receiving report, the off-going nurse and I received a call from the front desk asking us to see one of our surgical patients who had asked for an RN because they were bleeding. When we rushed to the patient's room we found that Mary Anne, the night shift charge nurse, was already there holding pressure to a surgical site that was heavily bleeding. In the few minutes that elapsed between the call we received and the time we made it to the room, she had already paged the doctor and had initiated interventions.

When the doctors came to the bedside shortly after…she continued to update the patient …and provide professional and compassionate reassurance. When the patient's concerned and scared family member arrived, we transitioned so that while I continued to work with the patient, Mary Anne spoke with the family member outside the room to put their mind at ease.
Throughout the night, Mary Anne checked in with me about the patient's status and also checked in with the patient. The patient talked to me throughout the shift about how thankful they were for the care she had given them. This is just one example of how Mary Anne has provided meaningful care.
Mary Anne’s positive attitude, experience, knowledge, and assistance go above and beyond. I have become a better, more passionate, and more confident nurse since I started working with her two years ago. She made a difference in that patient's life that night, along with many others, and has positively impacted my practice and growth as a nurse.
