Her compassion and empathy are only secondary to her competence and knowledge as an RN.
Erin has been my husband's RN several times. He was just readmitted after a relapse. Our sons came to visit him this weekend to watch football with him. Erin went out of her way to make this a wonderful experience for him. Her compassion and empathy are only secondary to her competence and knowledge as an RN. Relapse is discouraging and frightening, but neither of those were present on Sunday, thanks in part to Erin. She allowed him to focus on the normalcy with his sons. She interacted with them when she came in for things she needed to do and talked to them about football. It gave him an afternoon that seemed almost like home. I have said many times that hope, drive to survive, and trust and confidence in your team are critical to survival. They are things that cannot be infused, transfused, or medicated. So much of that depends on the patient, but people like Erin help along the way. She is competent and answers my many endless questions; if she doesn't know, she finds out and gets back to me. She goes out of her way to make sure I understand something, even if it's not what I want to hear. I am able to leave at 6 pm each night, reluctantly, yes, but not scared. I know that he has excellent care here, and that is the most I can ask for. I have worked in 3 medical centers as a tech alongside nurses, and I would work alongside her happily. She is competent, no-nonsense when needed, but full of laughs when you need it.
