Tom Viscuso was nominated for the DAISY Award based on his perseverance and dedication to patient care during a staffing crisis in a time of need. Due to several nurses on our NTH01 team leaving unexpectedly, Tom case managed 50 plus patients on his caseload. Although Tom had a heavy caseload, he volunteered to see a nursing evaluation for a Physical Therapy start of care for which the Physical Therapist had medication concerns. This patient did not speak English and had little family help in the home. Tom took the time to communicate via the interpreter line, and when that didn't work, Tom sat with the patient and coordinated a conversation with the patient's daughter, who lived in Pakistan, to ensure proper communication. Tom was able to contact this patient's physician's office and assess meds and call the patient's pharmacy to help order a missing medication. In addition, Tom spent the time to put together a weekly pill box to help the patient coordinate her medications. I feel that during a time of stress and being overburdened with a heavy caseload, Tom demonstrated the ability to put the patient first and ensure patient safety.
