Throughout the pandemic, our team showed in numerous ways that patient care comes before COVID! We used a saying from the beginning of COVID that ‘a pandemic does NOT stop cancer’ and leadership is proud to say, our nursing showed what that means via their actions. Despite staffing issues, and the worldwide pandemic burnout, there was truly never a moment in which our patients paid the price and did not get the care they needed. Oh! But not just any kind of care! It was care that was compassionate, understanding, and patient. While our patients were not allowed visitors (due to immunocompromised safety protocols), our staff became more than nurses; they became our patients’ emotional support, their second family, and their chairside confidants. When it was easiest to give in to the world's chaos, our nurses did the opposite! I write this on behalf of every patient, every family member, and every other person that walks through our infusion room who saw the above firsthand.
