Michelle truly deserves recognition for both the clinical and compassionate care that she provides to her patients and their families. Michelle recently cared for a patient who ultimately became a hero to his family and others through organ donation. She skillfully managed all the clinical aspects of caring for a critically ill patient while providing care and compassion to a devastated family. Michelle supported them through the unimaginable decision to allow their loved one to become an organ donor and save the lives of others. During a follow-up phone call with the family of this patient, they remarked at how thankful they were to the medical team and especially the nurses at Hasbro Children’s Hospital. They shared their impressions that they knew their loved one was well taken care of by attentive and caring clinicians in the PICU. Furthermore, they were so grateful for the compassion shown to the patient’s mother who was facing her own medical crisis. Because of the tremendous efforts of Michelle and the entire PICU team, we helped this family re-write the ending to a very tragic story. The family mentioned that this experience was “life-changing and gave them hope seeing all the moving parts done by good humans.” There are no better humans in my estimation than the folks working in the PICU.
