Kathryn, affectionately known as “Kat” is a caring charge nurse who goes above and beyond to ensure that the patients are cared for in a manner that demonstrates compassion and dignity. One night Kat called me in tears because she wanted to help one of the patients on the unit while considering her staff needs as well. The patient suffered from a condition that caused them to not make the best decisions for himself. The patient would become impulsive and aggressive towards the staff which caused the team to be afraid of caring for the patient. Kat, worked alongside her staff to assist them with caring for the patients. She cared for the patient to role model to her team on how to care for a patient with a special need and huddled with the team to plan the best interventions for providing patient-centered care. As a result of the plan, the patient began to improve and was able to be discharged from our organization with an appropriate level of care to allow him the opportunity to heal.
