Kathy was able to calm him and earn his trust. My father felt he was in good hands. This helped calm his anxiety.
My father was admitted to the hospital on Monday. He was treated on the 4th floor cardiac Telemetry Unit by several wonderful nurses including Kathy L. Nunez through his transfer to another facility. Doctors didn’t really know if he’d survive given the complications. I witnessed the care and compassion Kathy exhibited while caring for my 69-year-old, non-English speaking father and towards our family through his departure. My father was very anxious, which didn’t help the situation. Kathy patiently and clearly explained everything to my father in Spanish every time she treated him. Kathy listened to understand and connect with her patient. Kathy asked if he understood and had questions in a calm and caring manner and repeated the information as needed with the utmost compassion. She always asked him if he needed something and ensured his needs were met, including meal ordering. She was able to calm him and earn his trust. My father felt he was in good hands. This helped calm his anxiety.

Actions speak louder than words. He told me specifically “esta enfermera es como un angel” meaning “this nurse is like an angel.” When the dialysis treatment was ordered and he was being prepared, Kathy noticed the fear and worry on my father’s face. The thought of having to go back to this process scared him. Kathy very kindly re-explained why it needed to be done and how this process could assist his heart, lungs, and kidney. Our family left the hospital daily each night feeling that he was in the “best” hands.

On the date of his transfer, Kathy ensured all his needs were met. She said to my father and the paramedics before you take him, I need to change his IV access point and tape. She said to my father “Senor, all is good and good luck with everything.” She went and got him a Kleenex box because his nose was running, and they may be needed during the transfer. We said our goodbye to Kathy and thanked her immensely for her care and her compassion and willingness to use her Spanish to help people like my father. It truly made a world of difference for him and our family. God bless her!!!

My father has been hospitalized numerous times at Saint Alexius Medical Center. Our family has always been grateful for the service and care received. This time Kathy touched our lives and hearts through her natural dedicated care and compassion. It was a very scary time for our family and my father, particularly because at the onset he could not have any visitors. Seeing how Kathy cared for my father gave us peace and confidence that he was in the best hands. I’m happy to share that he has been discharged from the other facility and on the mend.
