Robin clearly was so happy to see him and tears came to her eyes as they talked.
Robin was the Endo on-call RN the night a patient came in with a significant GI Bleed. This case was very difficult and a Blakemore tube was utilized to apply pressure as the bleeding could not be stopped. This patient was in the ICU intubated for some time and Robin expressed how worried she was about him as she thought he was going to die in front of her. I didn’t know the connection Robin made with this patient until he came in for a consultation with our Interventional Radiologist for another procedure.
I was walking into Procedural Nursing and saw him sitting in a recliner with his wife at his side and stopped in my tracks. I walked into his room and told him how happy I was to see him sitting up and alive and well! He and I talked for a few minutes and he told me he remembered Robin from the night he came in with the GI bleed. I asked him if I could have her come over from Endo to see him and he said he would be very happy to see her again. Robin clearly was so happy to see him and tears came to her eyes as they talked. This patient was knocking on death's door but it just wasn’t his time to go and Robin to this day is asked for by him when he comes back for follow-up visits. I never thought to ask this patient if he would like to nominate Robin for this prestigious award but I am sure if I had, he happily would have done so.
