By the end of the shift, Bria was the client's “best friend”.
Bria Newell is a sophomore-nursing student who displays all of the attributes required to achieve the DAISY Award. I have had the pleasure to facilitate clinical instruction for Ms. Newell for two consecutive semesters. Ms. Newell consistently prepared for clinical. She demonstrates a commitment to compassionate care of patients and families as evidenced by her willingness to assist staff with clients, not a part of her patient assignment; assist other students with the provision of care, and her willingness to accept new assignments when assigned a patient at discharge.
On many occasions, she volunteered for the patients who needed total care. Ms. Newell consistently developed a connection/relationship with her patients, Families, and peers and is capable of building their trust and respect. On one occasion, she provided care to a client with an NGT and the client was concerned about her ability to administer his meds. By the end of the shift, she was the client's “best friend”.
On another occasion, Ms. Newell provided care for a patient who was a victim of abuse. Ms. Newell was supportive and helped the patient to understand the safety measures that were in place to prevent abuse of the patient. She reinforced the hospital's safety measures and instructed the patient to use the call button or call to notify the nurses should there be concerns regarding safety.
