She held me when I cried and left me when I just needed to be alone with him.
My husband "M" passed away in the ICU unit at Georgetown Hospital. 4 days prior, he was hospitalized in the unit. From that time on, he was assigned to Heather Moree as his day nurse. At times he was very confused, anxious, and angry. This woman cared for him with compassion and professionalism even when he was "acting out." At one point, I left briefly to go home. Heather phoned me and said she thought I should come back. She was SO right. It was time to make a decision. I was blessed to be able to make that decision with my husband and share it with the Doctor. From the point that we decided to stop any further lifesaving efforts, this nurse continued to care for my husband with compassion, kindness, and professionalism. Even after he became unconscious, she cleaned his mouth, suctioned him when he was having difficulty, changed his position, and made sure he was ALWAYS clean! She also took care of me! She never left the room without asking if I needed anything, and after a while, it became "have you eaten? Have you slept? You must take care of yourself"! So very kind. She held me when I cried and left me when I just needed to be alone with him. At 3am, when our family arrived, the night nurse immediately let them in to see their dad/grandpa "M." Chairs appeared without being requested, and blankets arrived again without being requested (it was cold in the room). The loving care of "M" continued, and now it included my family and me! The night nurse appeared all night and Heather all the next day without being asked. They sensed when something was needed, they left us to privacy when we needed that, and at 1:15 am Sunday morning, as he began to leave us, the night nurse closed the door and the curtains and let us have our time. He was surrounded by love and his family and an ICU staff (ALL OF THEM) who are amazing, competent, caring, and so very, very kind. From the bottom of my heart and the hearts of our daughter, son, granddaughter, and grandson who were with us, we thank them all but especially Heather and the night nurse. I personally don't know what I would have done without them. I was there 24 hours each day, and they treated me with such kindness and care, and yet AT ALL times, they did their job with grace and competence. It is with such gratitude and, yes, love that my family nominates Heather Moree for the DAISY Award!
