She displayed an excellent balance of professionalism and humanity throughout a very intense night.
Jenn Rom, from the Labor and Delivery Department at Kaiser Permanente (Santa Clara), provided excellent care throughout my overnight birth experience. I came into Labor and Delivery needing to be artificially induced, despite having wanted to give birth "naturally" or medicine-free, and she explained each medical option that I faced at every stage in such a way that I continued to feel empowered. She was an attentive listener, as well as an effective communicator. It was also incredibly reassuring for me to notice how rigorous she was with hygiene (so many glove changes!) and how conscientious she was about informing me whenever there was something done to my body: she and her team always sought consent, which added to my sense of remaining empowered in a very vulnerable experience. Moreover, when my tolerance for pain turned out to be less than I'd hoped, Jenn was very compassionate and professional in offering me alternatives. She displayed an excellent balance of professionalism and humanity throughout a very intense night. At times I felt - and made very clear! - that I simply couldn't continue through the pain of childbirth, and Jenn quickly stepped into the role of coach, guiding me to (quite literally) push through. And although I questioned myself, there was never a moment that I questioned the competence of the medical team at Kaiser, which was incredibly reassuring. Of course, in the end, it was the best night of my life, and as I reflect back on it, I especially wish to acknowledge the excellence that Jenn Rom displayed in supporting my childbirth process. It is for all of these reasons that I am nominating her for the DAISY Award.
