Meet our DAISY Award recipient for the month of June, Samantha Hughes, from the ER at Jefferson Bucks Hospital. Samantha was nominated by her manager, who stated, “Sam always exemplifies caring behaviors. Sam recently had a patient who signed into the emergency room with low blood sugar. Sam noticed in her first interaction with the patient that the patient was a little off and that she may need more than what was ordered. She took the time to talk with the patient, not just asking specific questions, but she had a conversation with the patient which resulted in attaining information that had not been given to the triage nurse or doctor. Sam contacted the patient’s sister to clarify if the information she received was accurate and if her behavior was her baseline; it was not. Sam immediately gave this information to the attending doctor, and as a result, the patient was sent for a CT scan, and it was discovered the patient had a stroke. The patient was a candidate for a thrombectomy. During the process of working the patient up, Sam stayed by the patient’s bedside and explained every detail to her while providing comfort to both the patient and family member. Sam also was able to bring humor to the situation. She is known for eliciting at least one smile or laugh, no matter the situation, because she has a gift for connecting with people. I do not know the specifics of what Sam said, but you could tell by the patient’s and sister’s body language that Sam was providing them with comfort and reassurance. This is just one example of the care Sam provides to her patients and also her coworkers. She does not ask if you need help; she just helps. She is there with you, and you never feel alone or that something cannot be done. She cares, and everyone knows it, not because she says it, but because she shows it.” Congratulations Samantha!
