Scott embraces leadership, engages others, and creates a healthy work environment.
As a school assignment, I read journal articles on a healthy work environment. I’m sure you are thinking, “where is she going with this”, but I assure you that it is positive. The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses lists standards for successful work environments. They are: skilled communication, true collaboration, effective decision making, appropriate staffing, meaningful recognition, and authentic leadership. Only because he has no input on staffing, Scott Dawson is the epitome of making the orthopedic surgery leadership a successful work environment. Everyone wants and persuades management to be under his leadership and service because they know they will be supported and guided in the right direction without hiccups, errors, or the least to no problems. He comes in early and leaves late to make sure that everything is taken care of. Scott is proficient in communicating all needs of the surgeons to the nurses by writing all the cases and surgeons' preferences on paper. He collaborates with representatives to make sure surgeons and patients have what is needed which saves time and money in delays. He is a team player by always helping with turnovers by making beds or pulling trash. Scott is humble in recognizing nurses and scrub techs for their value in making the day go smoothly with a “good job”. Scott embraces leadership, engages others, and creates a healthy work environment within One Day Surgery orthopedic department authentically. ODS and UAMS would be at a dire loss if he decides to retire early or move on to another nursing field because no one can fill his shoes. I watch him closely and hope that one day I’m nearly as good of a leader as he is. This man works really hard for each patient, for each nurse and scrub tech, and for ODS. In recognizing Scott and his value to ODS, I send this email to multiple places, seeking meaningful recognition for all he does for ODS and the value he brings to UAMS and the nursing field. As I leave the department, his leadership will always be remembered.
