Donna gave the patient space and respect. She just sat down and got eye level; even though he was trying to hit everyone else.
Donna was just going off shift. The patient in room X became very confused, swinging at people. He would not let anyone near. This was not Donna's assigned patient from the PM shift. Donna volunteered/offered to go see him. She gave the patient space and respect. She just sat down and got eye level; even though he was trying to hit everyone else. She truly advocated for this patient. She asked staff to step back and give him space, while she quietly spoke with him. With integrity, she gained his trust where the rest of the staff could not. She committed to staying with the patient until he was/or felt safe because he didn't know where he was and was confused. While she was in the room, she kept a calm voice, she got eye level, she asked him what his needs were, and she met them for him. She stayed with him until 1 1/2 hours past her time to be off duty. Doing this was an outstanding help for the oncoming shift. She didn't even know the patient. This was an excellent display of commitment to her.. our... patient.
