From the way she educates the parents, the way she leads the other nurses, and the way she cares for the babies first and foremost.
Our son was admitted to NICU after being born early at 29 weeks. He was also very small. No parent is prepared for their time in the NICU, even with prep. The alarms constantly going off, having wires all over your child, and in our case, not being able to hold him until 3 days after he was born. This experience is not only a bit traumatizing, but it is absolutely terrifying.
As a healthcare professional myself, no amount of training could prepare you to watch your young, small child be on the monitors and not even be able to take him home. Janets was assigned to him as one of his team nurses. Her knowledge and wonderful care for our son gave me the ease I needed to be able to go home and take care of myself without worrying about the care he is getting.
Janets truly cares for the babies in the NICU and it is shown in everything she does. From the way she educates the parents, the way she leads the other nurses, and the way she cares for the babies first and foremost. An instance is when our son was extra irritable during a diaper change. Mind you, changing a diaper is no easy feat with the wires he has attached. Janets took her time, and made sure that whenever he was crying she would stop and console him, always saying “it’s ok Bebe, it’s ok”. Making sure he felt safe and secure during the change. Another instance is when she wasn’t his nurse for the day, she made sure to stop by and call him by his nickname that we shared with her. The fact that she remembered his nickname and came by showed us her true compassion.
She’s always given us the confidence and autonomy to care for our son, even though we are not his nurses. She has shown us how to pick him up safely, how to bathe him, and even reminds us to take videos and pictures of the cute things he does. Janets is an absolute angel in my eyes. I always look forward to the days that she is his nurse. My husband and I even talk about making her his Godmother because that is how much she has impacted us and impacted our son. We love and thank Janets for the rest of our lives!
