She has integrity, is a leader, and is knowledgeable, but the one adjective that describes Madison the most is: compassionate.
I would like to nominate this extraordinary nurse for a DAISY Award. Madison is a charge nurse, preceptor, and patient advocate. I first met her during a Rapid Response but have gotten to know her on a personal level. When you meet Madison, you can truly see that she went into nursing to be a "nurse." She has integrity, is a leader, and is knowledgeable, but the one adjective that describes Madison the most is: compassionate. I can tell you a few stories, but there is one that stands out. On Mother's Day, an RRT was called to the INICU. Madison was not the primary nurse but was there advocating for the patient and mentoring this patient's nurse. The patient was a DNR/DNI, but there were treatment options available to her, so the physicians were trying to get in contact with the patient's family. While we were waiting to hear from the patient's family, Madison noted a priest was listed as one of the primary contacts. Pastoral care informed us it would be at least an hour before a priest could come to the patient's bedside. Time was of the essence, and Madison came to me and said we could give this patient their last rites. Surrounded by the nursing supervisor, a translator, and myself, Madison led us in prayer. We then moved the patient to the ICU. A half-hour later, the family decided they did not want to pursue advanced treatment and comfort measures were instituted. The patient was transferred back to the INICU. I went to check on the patient, and Madison had just done mouth care, washed her face, and was putting Vaseline on the patient's lips. She looked at me and said, "I have music on, and they cannot even hear it." The patient was deaf and mute, but you could feel the ambience in the room. Madison had just given pain medication, and then sat down next to the patient . This patient was not going to die alone. This patient was going to leave this world with dignity and respect. I just want to say thank you to Madison. Thank you for all you do for your patients, especially the ones who need a nurse to be "their voice." You are truly extraordinary and deserve this DAISY Award.
