The patient said it helped to have a friend in the room joking with her and talking about something as normal as coffee, to ease her fears.
A nomination from a co-worker stated: “I stopped in at the bank and was approached by someone who stated they had been a previous patient. She said they had been in the hospital for surgery and that her nurse in PACU was the best, and she hoped I could help identify her. She was very pleased with her entire experience with us and said that every staff member and the physician took excellent care of her, but she couldn’t stop thinking about her reassuring angel in PACU. She said she never opened her eyes while in PACU, so she didn’t get the name of the nurse that made her feel so much at home.

The patient said that she felt the most gentle little pat on her arm while the nurse tried to wake her up. When she asked the nurse what time it was, she was told that it was in the afternoon. The patient joked that she had missed her coffee. The nurse spent time talking with her about her favorite coffee and they bonded over their preference for liquid coffee creamer. She said it helped to have a friend in the room joking with her and talking about something as normal as coffee, to ease her fears. After she fell back to sleep, she felt that gentle little pat on her arm and found out that the nurse had gone to get her some coffee and made a point to place her own liquid coffee creamer in it. The patient said it was the best cup of coffee ever and that she really appreciated the nurse taking the time to make it and add that special touch. She hoped to send the nurse a personal thank you because something so small meant so much to her during her time with us.”

Thanks, Mandy, for always going the extra mile!
