Caylee had a gut feeling that something was not right.
Caylee admitted a patient in serious critical condition on night shift, whose status continued to decline during the day. The team and family had both agreed to withdraw care due to the patient's poor neurological status and other serious injuries including multiple pulmonary embolisms. When Caylee arrived back for her shift at 1900, the team was prepared to withdraw care on this patient. Caylee had a gut feeling that something was not right. She followed her gut feeling and assessed this patient in depth. The patient immediately followed Caylee's commands and was able to move every extremity. Caylee was certain to convey these findings to the team of physicians. When the providers saw this, they consulted for ECMO and emergently took her to the Cath Lab for extrication of the clots. Care was not withdrawn on this patient and her condition quickly stabilized throughout the next few days. Because of Caylee's actions and assessment findings, she was able to save this patient's life.
