I would like to recognize RN Lona Reese, who works in Sentara Heart Hospital 5HH. I had been admitted to the Heart Hospital three times, a very difficult time for my family and me, to say the least. During these multiple stays within three months, I have had more nurses than I could count, but something about Lona was different. She was always so pleasant and upbeat. You could tell that she had a great rapport with her coworkers, and she was nice and equally as pleasant with the patients. Before she came, all I wanted to do was lay in the bed and cry. By this third admittance, I had given up hope and became very depressed. I'm not sure what it was, but Lona's presence put me at ease; just her being here made a difficult time easier to handle. After a few days, Lona's kindness and encouragement got me out of the bed and wanting to do more to help myself. If it weren't for Lona, I know that I wouldn't be progressing at such a successful rate. My family even raved about how pleasant Lona was when they came to visit. They felt better about me staying, knowing that Lona was with me. I understand the DAISY Award is given to nurses who demonstrate excellence and extraordinary compassionate care. For all of these reasons and more, I endorse Lona Reese, without reservation, for the DAISY Award.
