Laura arranged for her other patients to be cared for by other nurses so that she could stay with her patient at CHKD to provide her the care she needed.
Laura was assigned an extremely complicated patient that was a “compassionate” transferred to our facility due to one of her twins being terminal at CHKD NICU, and the other was stable in our NICU. The patient had a significant amount of blood loss, requiring the need for two units of blood on the day shift, even after receiving two units overnight and several immediately after delivery. Unfortunately, the patient received word from KD that her baby was being extubated and was rapidly declining, so she needed to get over there ASAP so that she could be with her baby during their last moments of life. Laura knew she could not delay her patient care, but she had to get her to her baby to be with them during this crucial time period. Laura arranged for her other patients to be cared for by other nurses so that she could stay with her patient at CHKD to provide her the care she needed, including administering her blood transfusion, closely monitoring her vital signs, and being there to support her patient. Laura was with her patient at CHKD for four hours, providing 1:1 for her patient. This patient will never forget the kindness and compassion that Laura had being with her this day and going the extra mile to ensure she was safe.
