Sophia did so much work to get the patient’s story discretely and successfully relayed all concerns to leadership, case management, and the providers.
This patient was admitted for seizure monitoring, and when RN Sophia Barrett was asking her the admission questions regarding feeling safe at home and in her relationship, she whispered "no". Her significant other was in the room and there was a history of physical, verbal, and financial abuse. Sophia did so much work to get the patient’s story discretely and successfully relayed all concerns to leadership, case management, and the providers. Sophia created situations where she or case management could be alone with the patient so the patient could speak freely. Sophia went as far as to create a document that summarized all the events during her shift so that the next shifts understood the patient’s background and emerging plans for discharge. The patient verbalized so much gratitude for all the time and coordination that Sophia did for her in order to get her safely discharged.

Because of Sophia’s advocacy and attention to detail, we were able to create a safe discharge plan from the hospital where the patient discharged to her mother’s home out of state instead of home to her significant other. This story is only one of many that demonstrate Sophia’s kind, loving, and incredible spirit. She exemplifies Rush’s ICARE values in her daily interactions with her patients, and she is just the exemplar of Relationship & Caring, and Collaboration especially. Her impact on her patients is large and meaningful, and we want to commend her for her amazing advocacy, especially in this situation. Thank you so much, Sophia!
