Although this is a small unit they are a mighty unit. They have been faced with several obstacles since the Pandemic started. The unit has been shut down on 3 separate occasions and the team was asked to float to many different units to assist in staffing. They have opened the unit to taking care of COVID patients on 4 different occasions. In August when the unit opened to take care of COVID patients the team rallied together. The charge nurses were asked to take care of two patients along with the flow of the unit, all the while still floating out the extra staff to other units in need. They maintained a great standard of care, performed all the required responsibilities, and kept a positive attitude.
During the most recent surge the team was asked to transfer out several non-COVID patients to other units to make room for 10 COVID beds. Within 30 minutes the team was able to transfer out 3 patients and started to except the COVID patients from ER. With their quick action and teamwork, the unit was able to take multiple COVID admissions from the ER and offload the ER.
Then the following week while still caring for the COVID patients, they were asked to take non-COVID patients from the ER because they were backed up and holding patients on this particular day the unit admitted 6 patients who had 3 RRTs and transferred 2 patients to ICU because of their critical condition. 5M always does what is asked of them. They never complain, they are committed to caring for the patients and give all that they have. 5M orthopedics is resilient, dedicated, and amazing. There is no other unit more deserving of this award.
