Carina got them enrolled in Babycare so that they would the baby supplies needed.
Carina took care of a postpartum patient who just had her first baby. The patient and her significant other were so wonderful and very excited to be parents but also needed a lot of extra support in learning how to care for their baby due to some diagnosed intellectual delays. Carina took extra time to show them how to care for their baby – even finding creative ways such as making a feeding reminder chart and utilizing the white board to remind them of diaper changes. Despite it being a busy day, she always found time to make sure they got the extra attention they needed and deserved.

As Carina spent time in the room and got to know them, she learned that they did not have many supplies for their baby or a stable housing plan. Even though we ask about those things on admission, they only admitted it to Carina because she gained their trust and had showed them so much kindness. Carina got them enrolled in Babycare so that they would the baby supplies needed. She also went up the chain of command to the manager of social work to figure out a housing plan. They were able to get them a hotel for a month until they could move into the government housing the social worker was able to get them in to. Over the course of the two shifts, Carina went above and beyond the call of duty. I could not be more proud to have her as a nurse on this unit. I know she changed their lives forever and Carina embodies everything the DAISY Award is about.
