Alison immediately advocated for my patient. She fought for him to not be discharged and for PSL to help him in any way they could.
Alison showed advocacy and an enormous amount of empathy for a patient who showed back to the ED anticipating getting help and admittance to a detox center, but the MD had accidentally given him the wrong time. The patient was actively withdrawing and very discouraged that he had done everything right for the 24hrs only to show up and be declined admission to the rehab center due to a error. Our MDs discharged him and the patient cried silently.

I am new off orientation and he was my patient, I told Alison what was going on and asked how could I help this patient. She immediately advocated for my patient. She fought for him to not be discharged and for PSL to help him in any way they could. Unfortunately the patient had to wait until the next day. Alison explained to the patient the situation but pleaded with him not to leave as she thought he wouldn't return. She found a quiet space for him in the building, gave him all the warm blankets, pillows, food and snacks, and checked on him every hour until 0730.

Working in the ED, we see a lot of nurses who are burnt out, and whose compassion has been jaded but Alison showed me there are ones still out there who will not let their patients suffer and be lost in translation due to circumstances that were 100% out of his control. Someone asked her, "why are you doing all of this?" and she with no hesitancy said, "because he needs us and we need to help the ones who want to help themselves." I am very lucky to work alongside such an amazing human being.
