There is much relatively routine activity that takes place in everyday inpatient medicine and that may frequently be overlooked when moments arrive for individual staff recognition. Nevertheless, it is the attention given to these details that can prove quite impactful for patient well-being. Such was the case with care provided by this nurse, of which I was the beneficiary during my hospitalization at Saint Joseph’s Hospital last month.

I had expected to remain hospitalized for three nights. However, due to complications, I spent an entire week, during which she participated in the final two nights. There are several instances that could be mentioned to commend her exemplary care; I will focus on only one among those that demonstrate her significant empathy.

In past years I myself have worked as an inpatient care provider and have taken note of reviews in medical and nursing literature on the topic of patient sleep patterns. As happenstance would have it, in my first nights at St. Joseph’s I was awakened nearly on an hourly basis for monitoring and testing, which finally led to a quite stressed mindset by the time she arrived on the service. In discussing various alternatives with her we arranged a plan that succeeded in minimizing this kind of overnight wakening. She even followed up by unilaterally improving on our plan, by carefully managing complex IV medication changes and related procedures in a way that allowed me to continue sleeping throughout her activity. While this and others of her interventions may appear modest, for me personally they elevated a good hospital experience into an exceptional stay.

She was always courteous and thorough in explaining processes and attentive in carrying them out in a prompt manner. To summarize, it came as a surprise when she informed me she has served as a nurse for one year. Actions belied this limited amount of calendar time, with her overall calming mannerisms being those of a long-practicing professional. Thank you very much for your assistance in helping provide recognition for her special efforts!
