My father was not to eat anymore, but loves milk, so Ryan had it available for him at all times.
My father was admitted to UPMC East. After numerous tests, we learned he had stage 4 pancreatic cancer. There was nothing that could be done to treat it. He passed away in ICU at UPMC East 3 weeks after the diagnosis. One weekend, Ryan was working and he accommodated all of my father’s needs without hesitation, even simple requests. Ryan recognized my father was dying, even though it was something we did not speak about. My father was not to eat anymore, but loves milk, so Ryan had it available for him at all times. Ryan had sponges for water for my father’s mouth. Ryan was extra cautious when he cleaned him up and repositioned him since he was in soo much pain. He made us feel like we were the only family on the unit! It takes a special person to do that being as busy as Ryan is. I asked Ryan how he was able to accommodate our needs so willingly and easily with being so busy. Ryan said, “it would be inhumane not to.” While it is hard to tell the quality of medical care one can receive, it is not hard to tell how it feels to accommodate a person at the end of their life. Thank you, Ryan!
