Upon receiving the news, Gloria consoled and comforted the patient.
Gloria Smith is a phenomenal Registered Nurse. Currently, she is the Shift Coordinator at Children’s Health Center at Anacostia. Often, Gloria goes out of her way to ensure that the daily operations of the health care center run smoothly. Most days she serves as the flow nurse for the center. Ms. Smith frequently goes above and beyond for the patients that she cares for. One example of Gloria’s dedication to her patients was when an adolescent patient had received lab results that revealed their HIV test was positive. Upon receiving the news, Gloria consoled and comforted the patient. The patient was later instructed to go to the main campus for additional support; however, the patient expressed concern that they did not have money for transportation. As the Social Worker was unavailable on the day, Gloria provided the adolescent with an Uber to get to the hospital for additional care. Additionally, she and her colleagues provided the adolescent with money to get home after the appointment. Gloria wanted to ensure that the adolescent would receive supportive care after receiving such a devastating diagnosis.
Gloria is very passionate about the care delivery that is provided to the patients and families she serves. Her awareness of the health and socioeconomic disparities in Wards 7 and 8 is the key driver for the compassion she expresses towards those in need. As a native Washingtonian, she believes that this is her way of giving back to the community that facilitated her development and led to the success of her career as a Registered Nurse. Gloria is also a true champion and advocate for wellness. Annually, she sponsors and leads an annual health fair within her religious community to ensure that the community is well informed and has awareness of health issues that are impacting the community. Ms. Smith has been a community health nurse advocate for more than 20 years. Her professionalism, commitment, compassion, and connection to the patients and families has made her a pillar in the community, especially at the Anacostia Health Center.
