Julia is a night shift river medical unit nurse. She is kind and patient and on this particular night displayed some of the most exceptional nursing care. She was caring for a patient that had been on our unit since we started as new nurses together in August. Julia showed the utmost patience when the family was struggling to decide on a course of treatment. She advocated fiercely for this family and the patient, and for hours she went between the family, doctors, respiratory therapists, and leadership. She was diligent in communicating her concerns. This night was incredibly difficult, the patient ended up passing away mid-morning. I watched as Julia completely pivoted in her nursing care from life-saving measures to holding space for this family’s grief. From now on when I reflect on what being a nurse means to me. I will always have the most vivid memory of this shift and how fearlessly Julia cared for this family in the most difficult circumstances.
