To help with the family's grieving process, Mary had an amazing idea to use paint and take a handprint of the patient's hand.
I am writing this for Mary Youngs, for the amazing work she did for a patient in the ICU. This patient was an upgrade from MS2 early in the morning to AAU, approx 4 hours after the patient upgraded, while getting dialysis the patient's heart stopped. The AAU team did a great job getting the patient the help he needed and after only 10 minutes of life-saving measures, the patient was transferred to the ICU, on a ventilator, and quickly placed on CVVH. The patient's family dynamics were not the greatest, the patient was living with his mom and had a 7-year-old daughter.

The next day the patient was not doing great and despite the 4 pressors the patient's blood pressure was not life-sustaining. The patient's mother decided to stop life-saving measures. After the family said their goodbyes and left, the patient was taken off the ventilator. To help with the family's grieving process, Mary had an amazing idea to use paint and take a handprint of the patient's hand. Despite her efforts, she couldn't find paint. M from Chaplaincy asked OB if they had anything she could use and they brought up a kit to take a mold of his hand. The sculpture was beautiful, detailed, and lifelike. So much of the detail like the fingernail and hand creases were captured. His daughter and mother will forever have a piece of him with them.
